Ninh Binh, a UNESCO World Heritage site south of Hanoi, Vietnam, is often called the “Ha Long Bay on land,” boasting stunning karsts, caves, and boat tours. Offering a less crowded and more affordable alternative to Ha Long Bay, it’s perfect for a day trip from Hanoi or a longer stay. While not entirely off the beaten path, it remains significantly less crowded and more budget-friendly.
This guide provides tips for budget travel in Ninh Binh, a 3-day itinerary with a cycling route map, and recommendations for accommodation and dining.
How Long to Stay in Ninh Binh
While we spent a week exploring Ninh Binh, combining travel with remote work, 2-3 days is ideal for most visitors to see the main attractions. A day trip from Hanoi is possible, especially if you utilize early trains and rent motorbikes near the station. However, for a first-time visitor, a guided tour ensures efficient transportation and itinerary management. Prioritizing the Trang An boat tour is recommended, regardless of your trip duration.
Best Time to Visit Ninh Binh
March offers pleasant temperatures and minimal rainfall. April, however, can be quite hot (over 90°F). Ninh Binh tends to be overcast, rarely experiencing clear skies. May and September are generally avoided due to extreme heat and heavy rains, respectively. December and January are the coldest months. Early spring is generally considered the ideal time to visit. While prices remain relatively consistent throughout the year, weekends tend to be more crowded due to domestic tourism.
Getting to Ninh Binh
Ninh Binh is easily accessible by train, bus, or van from Hanoi (approximately 2.5-hour journey). Private car hire offers a more expensive but convenient option. The Ninh Binh train station is part of Vietnam’s north-south rail line, making it a convenient stop for those traveling from central or southern Vietnam. Bus and van services are available from Ha Long Bay as well. A bus route to Sapa also exists, providing an alternative to going through Hanoi.
We purchased second-class train tickets from Hanoi to Ninh Binh for approximately $7 each way, booking online several weeks in advance.

Getting Around Ninh Binh, Vietnam
Transportation options in Ninh Binh are varied and affordable. Taxis, including metered “Malinh” (green) and electric “Xanh SM” vehicles, are readily available near the train station. While Grab might be unreliable, renting a scooter offers greater flexibility. A local couple near the station rents scooters for approximately $4 per day, plus gas, and offers responsive WhatsApp communication. Alternatively, most homestays and hotels facilitate bicycle or scooter rentals.
Where to Stay in Ninh Binh
Staying within Ninh Binh city itself is less desirable. Consider booking accommodations in villages surrounding Tam Coc or Trang An for easier access to attractions. While the author’s previous homestay experience was average due to nearby construction and excessive smoking, they researched and recommend highly-rated alternatives for future visits. Finding ideal accommodations requires careful balancing of cost, location, and comfort, which may be streamlined with efficient search strategies. (Note: This section includes a marketing link to a course on efficient accommodation finding.)
Sightseeing in Ninh Binh by Bicycle or Motorbike
Motorbikes are often cited as the most convenient mode for navigating Ninh Binh’s dispersed attractions and potentially unpaved smaller roads. However, bicycles are a viable and enjoyable option, particularly the free cruisers often provided by homestays. Bicycles offer cost savings, encourage exercise, and allow for a slower appreciation of the landscape. Motorbike rentals average around $6.60 per day. The author used bicycles primarily, renting a motorbike only for a longer trip to Bai Dinh.
Ninh Binh Bike Map
This map details routes accessible to both bicycles and motorbikes. It’s crucial to note that Google Maps may not accurately reflect current road conditions or paving status. Some paved roads may unexpectedly transition to gravel or dirt paths, but these short stretches are usually manageable. The interactive map includes parking locations, attraction descriptions, restaurant recommendations, and routes for key destinations like Tam Coc, Bich Dong, Trang An, Bai Dinh, and Hoa Lu. Top Things to Do: Ninh Binh Itinerary Ideas
This itinerary prioritizes Ninh Binh’s highlights for budget-conscious travelers. The Trang An boat tour is recommended as a priority, with other activities added based on available time.
1. Trang An Boat Tour in Ninh Binh
Reviews consistently favor Trang An over Tam Coc for its enjoyable experience and value. Both locations, however, have undergone changes since the initial visit, now featuring standardized tour packages. While beautiful, Tam Coc may involve more pressure to purchase goods or provide tips.
The bustling embarkation/disembarkation point for Tam Coc boat tours
Tam Coc offers a combined electric car and boat tour, costing approximately $11 per adult (plus potential tips). Boat capacity varies (two foreigners, four locals). The tour includes three caves, with rowers using a unique foot-powered rowing technique. An included electric bus provides transfers to Bich Dong Pagoda and other stops.
Trang An offers various tour durations (1-4 hours). A three-hour tour, encompassing nine caves and temple visits, is described as an example.
Exploring Ninh Binh: Boat Tours, Biking, and Caves
Ninh Binh offers a captivating blend of stunning landscapes and cultural experiences. This guide details three key activities: boat tours, cycling, and cave exploration.
1. Trang An Boat Tour: A Majestic Journey
Purchase your Trang An boat tour ticket (250,000 VND per adult) at the new complex opposite the boat launch. Motorbike and bicycle parking is available behind the ticket booth. A combo ticket includes an electric car ride and access to Khe Coc, though reviews suggest this add-on may not be worthwhile.
Access the boat launch via an underground walkway. Boats accommodate a minimum of four passengers, so solo or paired travelers will be grouped with others. The system is well-organized, with minimal pressure to shop or tip.
Entering a cave—a truly unforgettable experience!
Starting early (around 8:30 am) is recommended, especially on weekdays to avoid large crowds, particularly during Vietnamese or Buddhist holidays. While the initial part of the tour might be busy, it becomes more tranquil as you venture further.
The Trang An boat tour offers a highly rewarding experience. Consider supplementing this with biking around Tam Coc’s river areas if time allows.
Alternative Boat Tour: Ben Thach Bich
Unlike the organized Trang An and Tam Coc tours, Ben Thach Bich offers a more rustic experience. Located between Tam Coc and Bich Dong Pagoda, this 80-minute boat ride features local women paddling primarily by foot.
As of early 2024, pricing was inconsistent, and operations lacked the standardization of larger areas. Expect potential upselling and pressure to tip. We negotiated a price of 400,000 VND for two people but faced additional pressure for a 100,000 VND tip. While peaceful and scenic, with impressive caves, the experience falls short of Trang An’s organization. It might be a convenient alternative if you’re near Bich Dong Pagoda.
2. Bich Dong Pagoda and Tam Coc Cycling
Bich Dong Pagoda and Tam Coc are conveniently situated for a combined visit. Cycle around Tam Coc to observe the boat tours from various vantage points. Explore the lake path, visiting the Tam Coc Nature Lodge, a riverside cemetery, and the Đền Thái Vi temple amidst rice paddies and karsts.
To reach Bich Dong Pagoda, return to the main road. Paid bicycle/motorbike parking is available, but free options may exist further down the road. Entry to the pagoda is free. Explore its multiple temples and hidden cave shrines but be prepared for stairs. A valley path behind the pagoda offers additional exploration (details on interactive maps).
3. Mua Cave Climb: Panoramic Views
Mua Cave Ecolodge, near Tam Coc, offers a 500-step climb to panoramic viewpoints. While the entrance fee (100,000 VND) is relatively high, the views are exceptional and unique to the area. Parking is included with the entrance fee; ignore those attempting to charge you separately at the road.
Explore the ecolodge grounds, restaurant and cafes before starting the climb. Choose between left and right towers halfway up and explore both if you’re feeling energetic. A short valley path offers additional exploration.
Tiger Cave is adjacent to the stairs, and Mua Cave is a short walk away, leading to a spring and offering a quick passage through the karst.
Exploring Ninh Binh: A Traveler’s Guide
This guide details a trip to Ninh Binh, Vietnam, focusing on key attractions and practical information for visitors.
4. Bai Dinh Temple: Vietnam’s Largest Buddhist Complex
Bai Dinh Temple is the largest Buddhist temple complex in Vietnam, spanning 27 hectares. Allow at least 2-3 hours for exploration. Entry is free, but electric shuttles cost 30,000 VND each way. Motorbike parking is 15,000 VND. Consider taking a shuttle to the far end to minimize walking. The complex includes the ancient temple within mountain caves, along with newer structures, pagodas, gardens, and statues. Expect significant walking and stair climbing. Guides are available, and photographers often solicit business. Respect the temple by adhering to the dress code (no short shorts/skirts, cover shoulders) and maintaining silence. Due to its size and distance from other sites, allocate sufficient time for your visit. If temples aren’t a primary interest, prioritize other attractions.
5. Hoa Lu (Ancient Capital) and Bird Valley
With extra time, consider visiting Hoa Lu, Vietnam’s 10th and 11th-century capital, located between Trang An and Bai Dinh. However, limited remaining structures and poor English signage make a guided tour highly recommended (pre-booking advised). Parking attendants may falsely claim motorbike restrictions; park freely along the road to avoid the 10,000 VND fee.
Bird Valley, popular with locals, receives mixed reviews. Its distance from Bich Dong and the additional cost of a boat tour to see the birds make it less appealing to many foreign visitors.
Suggested 3-Day Ninh Binh Itinerary (Cycling)
This itinerary caters to active travelers. While manageable for average fitness levels, expect moderate physical exertion.
Day One: Tam Coc cycling route; Lunch in Tam Coc; Bich Dong Pagoda cycling route; Explore Bich Dong Pagoda on foot.
Day Two: Trang An cycling route; Morning boat tour at Trang An; Lunch at Trang An or Mua Caves; Mua Cave hike.
Day Three: Bai Dinh cycling route; Lunch at Linh Trang Cafe, Bai Dinh; Explore Bai Dinh Temple (e-shuttle to far end, walk back).
Dining in Ninh Binh
While Ninh Binh’s food scene lacks the quality and value found in places like Hoi An, numerous eateries surround attractions. English menus cater to tourists, with individual dishes from $2 upwards, offering substantial portions. Family-run establishments offer friendlier service and sometimes complimentary treats. Note that phở may differ from other regions, often lacking a flavorful broth. Larger restaurants, typically empty until tour groups arrive, serve pricier family-style meals. Goat meat dishes are local specialties, often lacking English menus.
The map includes restaurant recommendations near Bai Dinh and Tam Coc. However, Trung Tuyết in Ninh Binh town stands out for its exceptional food and customer service.

The restaurant features a unique dish, com chay, a local specialty. It’s served with rice crisps, broken into pieces and soaked in a flavorful soup. Their spring rolls are also highly recommended.
